Monrovia council approves 2026 pay increase for future elected officials

City staff presented the final reading for the ordinance and the companion resolution. "The new council compensation would be $1,359 per month," Mr. Fe told the council during the presentation, explaining the change reflects permitted inflationary adjustments under state law.
According to staff, California Government Code section 36516 allows general-law cities to adjust council pay for inflation but not by more than 5% per year; the increase incorporates allowable adjustments for 2025 and 2026. Mr. Fe said the change "cannot take effect until after the municipal election in November of 2026," meaning it will apply to the incoming 78th Monrovia City Council and not the sitting 77th council.
Council members voted on the motion to adopt the ordinance and resolution by roll call. Council member Edward Beldin, Dr. Kelly, Spicer, Mayor Pro Jimenez and Mayor Chevlin all voted yes. The clerk recorded the motion as approved by the full council.
City staff said the increased figures will be incorporated into future budgets and noted the ordinance aligns with previously discussed adjustment parameters. No amendments to the ordinance were recorded during the meeting.
The council adjourned after routine announcements; the ordinance will appear in future budget documents and take effect following the November election.
