County approves 90‑day detour for state bridge work on SR 421

Clinton County commissioners on March 3 approved the state’s request to use county 500 West as an unofficial detour while the state replaces a bridge on State Road 421 between 700 North and 800 North.
Rick Campbell, highway department, told the board the detour is expected to begin July 9 and run roughly 90 days, with a projected completion of Oct. 9. He said county crews have recorded current road conditions and plan to post 'no truck' signage where appropriate.
“We're also doing a project of our own on 750 which ties into that 500 West,” Campbell said, adding he had asked the state for a contact to address any potential damage and that he had discussed the plan with the contractor.
A commissioner moved to accept the detour and the dates; the motion carried on a unanimous vote.
The county also noted it will monitor traffic impacts and that any needed repairs would be tracked against the pre‑construction road recordings.
