Roosevelt County votes to seek bids and inspect tanks for county bulk fuel system

Roosevelt County commissioners voted to solicit bids for a county bulk fuel system and to begin tank inspections and procurement of card‑reader/software, saying the project could reduce fuel costs for road crews.

Commissioner Parker, who brought the item to the board, said the savings could be large even at modest price reductions: “even if we get it 10 cents a gallon cheaper, it's a massive savings,” he said during discussion. He moved to go out for bid and to start the tank inspection and software processes immediately; the amendment was seconded and carried by voice vote.

Supporters said the county already has tanks that might be reusable but stressed the need for inspections, regulatory compliance and a card‑reader system to track usage. Opponents urged the board to obtain price estimates for inspections and software before committing to a full procurement so the project’s total cost could be weighed against projected savings.

County staff said the tanks have not been used for several years and will require inspection. Commissioners directed staff to include estimated tank inspection costs and software/card‑reader options in the procurement planning so the board can finalize budget adjustments as needed.

The motion does not obligate the county to buy new tanks; it authorizes staff to solicit bids and begin the preparatory inspection and software procurement steps. The board carried the motion by voice vote. Next steps include returning to the commission with inspection results, cost estimates and draft bid documents for final approval.
