Members raised safety and cost concerns during a more than hourlong discussion about the police vehicle request. Mark said he was "less in favor of the Tahoe versus the Interceptor as well," citing worries about the Tahoe’s higher center of gravity on logging roads. Jim, who supported the larger chassis for off-road clearance, said, "It's important. . . . I'm in favor of the larger chassis," arguing that a pursuit-rated Tahoe could offer operational benefits on Rangeley’s terrain. The police chief joined the discussion to describe outfitting and total-cost estimates but noted the committee had not solicited competitive bids.
Committee members also discussed financing and timing: because of lease schedules and existing debt lines, approving the replacement now could create two vehicle payments in a single tax season. Some members urged setting a ceiling rather than a firm commitment so staff can pursue better pricing.
A motion to set a ceiling amount (motion recorded during the meeting) failed for lack of a majority; the committee did not approve any purchase amount on March 5. Members agreed to gather updated, side‑by‑side price comparisons for the Tahoe and the Interceptor and to revisit the vehicle request after the public hearing on March 10 and ahead of the selectmen presentation on March 17.
The committee’s deferral preserves time for the town to solicit bids and for the committee to consider a price comparison and operational review before committing taxpayer funds.
