The council suspended the three-reading requirement and adopted ordinance 032026 authorizing the mayor to contract with the Stark County Public Defenders Office to provide legal counsel for indigent North Canton residents in Canton Municipal Court for Jan. 1–Dec. 31, 2026. Staff said the city pays $200 per case; staff will email a case-count estimate on request.
Council also suspended the three-reading rule and adopted ordinance 042026 establishing the Amler Grant Fund and appropriating funds for 2026 to track and spend a $3 million state award for mine identification and remediation.
The council read resolution 052026 to renew the depository agreement with Huntington National Bank for five years beginning Mar. 1, 2026; the item completed its first reading. The council read and then suspended the rules to adopt ordinance 062026 to participate in the Ohio Department of Transportation cooperative purchasing program for sodium chloride for the 2026–27 winter season; staff noted that prior participation improves the city's priority for deliveries when supply is constrained.
Council also approved routine administrative items earlier in the session: minutes from Dec. 15, 2025; the 2025 final appropriations and finance reports; contract awards for the city hall HVAC replacement and police department renovation; and purchases of heavy equipment and vehicles for public works departments.
