Council certifies ward maps and affirms annexation practice

The Grand Island City Council on Nov. 18 voted to certify its current ward maps and to add language that will automatically place newly annexed areas into the adjacent ward.
Council President Shear led the discussion, noting previous annexations had been added to the nearest ward and recommending re-certification "in an abundance of caution." Shear praised the map-drawing work and moved to suspend rules so the ordinance could be considered; the council adopted the suspension and later approved certification of the ward map by voice vote.
Staff said the change will clarify future annexations so newly added territory will receive full voting rights as part of the adjacent ward. The council completed its agenda and adjourned.
