Residents press to preserve Old Mill; commission tables demolition review to May 6

Multiple residents and a Preservation Utah representative used the general public comment period on March 4, 2026 to urge the Cottonwood Heights Planning Commission to protect the Old Mill property and keep future development compatible with single-family canyon neighborhoods.
Robin Taylor Grand, identifying herself as a representative for Preservation Utah (and a District 2 resident), praised the commission and city staff for pursuing structural review and an RFQ for the Old Mill property and said the owner had been cooperative. Shauna Bland and other Old Mill Estates residents told the commission they hope future development remains single-family to protect safety and neighborhood character, citing the canyon’s single access road and concerns about traffic and parking.
Commissioners noted the issue had been discussed at recent work sessions and that the applicant intends further public outreach and open houses. During the business portion the commission voted to table project CUP-25-00005 — the conditional-use review related to demolition at the Cottonwood Paper Mill site — to a date certain of May 6, 2026 so that staff and commissioners can continue work-session review and additional public engagement.
The continuance gives staff and the applicant time to hold open houses and to continue work-session discussion; the commission took the action by motion and voice vote during the meeting.
