The City of North Canton announced Monday that it has hired Michael Elkins as parks planning and development administrator. The director of administration said Elkins accepted the offer and will begin work May 26.
The director described Elkins’s background: 33 years in public service beginning in Aurora and most recently serving in the City of Green, where he managed parks master plans, grant acquisition, strategic planning, ADA compliance efforts and park design implementation. "He has managed and implemented the city's 5- and 10-year parks and recreation master plans," the director said, noting Elkins’s experience with grant-funded facility construction, land acquisition and historic preservation and his memberships in the Ohio Parks and Recreation Association (OPRA) and the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA).
Council members welcomed the hire. One member said the timing is "excellent" given the city’s work on a parks master plan and the early-stage Main Street initiative; another urged that the administration keep council updated as the planning work advances.
What happens next: Elkins will start May 26 and the administration indicated it will bring the parks master plan draft to council at a future meeting for review and possible adoption.
Key detail: the director said the selection team interviewed multiple qualified candidates and made the hire following a multi-person selection panel process.
