Sobie Meats founder Tim Sobie sells shop to Amy Jones as he eases into retirement

Tim Sobie, who opened Sobie Meats in Walker 22 years ago, has sold the butcher shop to Amy Jones and will ease into retirement while remaining involved part time, the two said on the City of Walker’s "Made in Walker" podcast.
Sobie said health concerns and succession planning led him to pursue a sale rather than closing the business. "A couple years ago I had heart issues…we've kind of been thinking about selling anyway and then this opportunity came up," he said, describing the match with Jones as "a God thing" that kept the longtime staff intact.
Jones, who described herself as a fourth-generation member of the Egan family of businesses, said she is learning the trade and intends to preserve the store’s local feel. "I'm just soaking it in and trying to be a sponge," Jones said. She added that staff retention was a priority: "No one has left and that was very important."
Both owners emphasized continuity. Sobie recounted how he and his partner, Teresa, introduced Jones to employees at a team meeting shortly before Christmas to minimize disruption. "We wanted to tell everybody first hand and introduce Amy to the whole staff," he said, calling the staff "a family" and praising their ongoing role in the shop’s daily work.
Jones said she hopes to keep the shop’s neighborhood character while testing modest changes over the coming year, such as online ordering. "Maybe in a year there won't be a change in the feel of the store…But maybe in a year there might be some other additions," she said.
Sobie also described how he plans to step back gradually rather than stop abruptly. He said he expects to maintain some presence in the store as it transitions and plans travel in retirement, including a trip to Nova Scotia.
