County moves to adopt updated 2025 hazardous waste management plan

Thurston County Public Health presented an updated hazardous waste management plan on March 10 that replaces the county's 2014 plan and updates population data, regulatory references and disposal resources.
Public Health Director Jen Freight told commissioners the plan provides a framework for handling community-generated hazardous waste, identifies disposal facilities, sets waste-reduction and recycling goals, and outlines the funding mechanism for countywide management. She said the plan was finalized on June 20, 2025 following public engagement and outreach to cities and towns.
Freight said cities and towns reviewed the draft and have opted to adopt the county's plan as written. She noted the process began in 2024 with the solid waste advisory committee and that the update does not include major content changes but modernizes data and references to current regulations.
The item will return to the board next week for formal action; no vote occurred during the work session.
