Police leadership told the council the department is short on usable office and interview space and proposed an interim, relatively low‑cost interior remodel that would reclaim approximately 30–35% more operational area by building a wall and reconfiguring the front office into a squad/computer room and interview offices.
“We’re at the point where we need the space now,” the police presenter said, laying out a plan to convert existing carpeted space, add a u‑shaped countertop with additional computer stations and create two interview rooms. He emphasized the design would be an interim solution until a larger facility could be considered.
Councilmembers asked staff to develop a scope of work (SOW), obtain two or three competitive quotes and coordinate with Carmen on bids and cost estimates. The redevelopment commission indicated it might be willing to contribute funding but council asked staff to confirm how any remodel would affect other proposed building work and to obtain electrical and HVAC data in preliminary cost estimates.
Why it matters: The police department's constrained workspace affects daily operations, evidence storage and interview capacity; an interim remodel could improve efficiency without committing to a major capital project.
Next steps: Staff to prepare SOW and solicit multiple quotes; council will review estimates before approving any spending.
