Council members praise staff, urge turnout and update residents on local issues and investigations

During the work session on Feb. 18, council members used their time to brief residents on public-safety and community matters, encourage voting, and share local updates.
Councilman Peña asked about the number of online viewers (Mr. Cohen reported 15) and thanked staff for installing additional council-chamber cameras and adding wanding requirements for entry. Peña thanked the police department and commanding officers for their work on the new measures. He reminded residents the primary election is tomorrow and said he will make public endorsements for Ward A and Ward C; he stated, “I do not recommend Ms. Nicole Morales.”
Peña also raised maintenance issues, thanking staff for replacing trash cans and grooming beach sand after Storm Barrel in 2024 and asking staff to confirm the grooming schedule for the coming weeks. He asked whether an abandoned vehicle near the river had been removed; staff said they would follow up.
Peña asked about the status of an investigation into an alleged assault by Sydney Cain at the Feb. 13 special meeting; he said the investigation "is in progress" and thanked the Freeport Police Department for conducting it. He also said a petition related to Mayor Cain remains in progress and that an update would be provided later that week or next.
Councilman Davis congratulated the Brazosport High School basketball team on advancing in the playoffs, urged residents to vote and to support returning residents and housing efforts, and said the city’s population has dropped “from 12,000 to 10,000,” urging work to retain and attract residents.
Councilman Rosso criticized a local paper’s delivery and price changes, promoted the museum’s "Dinosaur George" exhibit for families, and praised the city manager’s responsiveness, calling her “Jane-on-the-spot.”
The council adjourned after a motion by Councilman Peña, seconded by Councilman Davis; the vote was in favor and the meeting ended at approximately 7:40 p.m.
