Council asks staff to research Rotary emblem, nonprofit recognition and entrepreneur accreditation

Jazelle Rodriguez, deputy town manager, opened the council’s round-table and introduced four new items for council consideration.

Council Member Robati raised a constituent request for benches at the senior center but later acknowledged a photo showed two benches already in place and the item was closed.

Mayor Collie proposed investigating adding a Rotary emblem to the town’s entrance monuments to emphasize civic engagement and welcome visitors. Several council members said they supported recognizing community organizations but were hesitant to single out one nonprofit on town monuments. "I'm hesitant though to add an emblem of any organization . . . to the town monuments other than the town of Morrisville," Council Member Johnson said, and suggested alternatives such as separate signage or rotating banners that spotlight nonprofit work.

Council members asked staff to gather examples from nearby towns (Holly Springs, Garner and others were suggested), to assess local precedents and costs, and to return with options. The mayor and others also asked staff to examine a "certified entrepreneurial community" accreditation as a potential low-lift way to demonstrate support for small businesses; council requested staff contact Holly Springs for details and consider possible chamber partnerships.

Action and next steps: staff heard direction to research (1) nonprofit recognition options and local examples, (2) the feasibility and expected resource needs for entrepreneurial-community certification, and (3) the Rotary emblem concept and whether alternatives would better serve recognition goals. Staff will return with findings and recommendations at a future round-table.

The council scheduled the next round-table for the first quarter of the coming year.
