Seymour High highlights AP achievements; students outline fall activities

Seymour High School and the Seymour Board of Education highlighted academic achievements and student activities during the Oct. 7 board meeting.
Board members marked the school’s recognition by the College Board with an AP School Honor (silver). Officials said 52% of last year’s graduating class took at least one AP course and 39% of graduates scored a 3 or higher on at least one AP exam — metrics that helped earn the school its silver designation.
"We had 52% of graduating seniors last year take one or more AP classes," a board speaker said while outlining the College Board criteria that led to the recognition. Board remarks also noted three students identified as National Merit commended or qualifying students.
Student council reported a slate of upcoming activities: homecoming on Nov. 9 at the middle-school gym, a planned movie night on Oct. 18 on the football field, and ongoing club work including Art Club, FBLA and an electric car club. The council asked the board to approve the recommendation to appoint Jeremy Tomaseski as the board’s junior student representative; the board sought a motion to approve that recommendation during the meeting.
Administrators and students emphasized the role of extracurriculars in student engagement while noting that the district will continue to pursue AP participation and support for college readiness.
