Board updates student‑wellness language, removes obsolete bullying policy and approves healthy‑food certification

Board members approved a small but policy‑relevant change to the student‑wellness policy and removed an outdated bullying policy that had been superseded by the district’s school‑climate policy.

Gavin, speaking for the policy committee, said the recommended amendment to policy 6142.101 adds one line: "classroom celebrations will focus on activities rather than food." The language was adopted to align with Connecticut Department of Education expectations following a food‑service audit. “We looked at policies from other districts and added a single line to encourage activity‑focused celebrations,” a committee member said.

Separately, the board voted to remove policy 4118.15 (bullying) after confirming it had already been replaced by policy 5131.911 (school climate); the motion to remove the old policy carried. Members said the older policy’s definition of bullying was outdated and the replacement climate policy governs current practice.

On nutrition, the board read and approved required certification language under CGS 10‑215F that commits the district to Connecticut nutrition standards for foods offered for sale to students from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027. By separate vote the board approved standard exemptions that allow sale of items that do not meet nutrition standards when sold at events occurring after the regular school day (for example, concession stands at games), consistent with statutory language.

All motions were seconded and adopted by voice vote. Staff said the MTSS handbook and related materials will be posted so parents can access updated procedures and guidance.
