The Schuylkill Valley School District board voted 6–1 to approve a varsity boys lacrosse schedule for the coming season after more than a dozen parents, coaches and players urged the board to preserve the program and seniors’ final season.
Several parents and community members told the board they believed a varsity schedule would help sustain the program and provide meaningful experience for freshmen who have already played in a winter league. ‘‘These seniors deserve their senior season,’’ said Sally Giggliotti, a parent who praised coaches and staff for their work and urged mentorship to younger players. Cameron Buer, the team’s representative, said players ‘‘accepted the risks’’ and warned that a JV decision could lead many players to quit and the program to collapse.
Board members said the district’s athletic director had brought concussion and roster numbers to the board’s attention, triggering the special meeting. A parent and commenter stated the team roster was about 12 players and that “I think six” players had a prior concussion history, a ratio several board members called ‘‘unexpected’’ during discussion. A board member asked whether the data had been reviewed and cautioned that the district would need to look at concussion patterns across sports if similar rates appeared elsewhere.
Several board members said they favored leaving the immediate choice to families and athletes where feasible while also weighing safety. ‘‘I’ve got to put my head on my pillow and know I’m doing what I think is best for the students and their safety,’’ one board member said, emphasizing the need to separate concussions from other injuries when making policy choices.
The board considered a previously discussed hybrid schedule (a mix of varsity and JV games) but determined the hybrid option was not possible for this season, so members were asked to choose either a full varsity schedule or a full junior-varsity schedule. A motion to accept the varsity resolution (4.1) was made and seconded; the board then voted and the Chair announced the motion carried, six in favor and one opposed.
The vote does not change the board’s emphasis on player safety. Members asked athletic staff and coaches to review training, coaching and scheduling to reduce concussion risk and to report back about youth pipeline numbers and co-op arrangements with other schools (board members cited uncertainty about participation from co-op partners such as Fleetwood). Board members repeatedly urged parents and players to prioritize safe play and encouraged the varsity roster to manage substitutions and playing time responsibly.
Next steps: the district will implement the varsity schedule for the season as approved; the board directed attention to follow-up work on concussion causes, recruitment and co-op partnerships to reduce the chance of a repeat scheduling crisis in future seasons.
