Public commenter Judith Chappelle described a recent lockdown and said a loaded 9mm semi-automatic pistol was found in a student’s vehicle, calling the incidents evidence of ongoing security challenges.
Several speakers urged the board to revisit the student code of conduct to ensure consequences are consistent, swift and sufficient to deter serious disruptions. Miss Hansen, citing classroom experience, recommended reworking the code to be age-appropriate (separate elementary and secondary provisions) and suggested creating a one-page summary for parents that highlights key expectations and consequences.
Superintendent Broski reviewed disciplinary standards for weapons incidents during his update, saying the maximum immediate consequence is a 10-day suspension with recommendation for expulsion and possible arrest by the Klay County Sheriff’s Office. Trustees said they will convene follow-up work to examine policy language and disciplinary procedures and to gather input from principals, teachers, parents and students.
