Students, spelling-bee finalists and East High cheer champions honored at board meeting

The Laramie County School District #1 Board of Trustees opened its March 2 meeting with a series of recognitions for students and school programs.
Eliza was introduced by board speakers and acknowledged for leadership roles (senior class secretary, French club, science honor society) and stage-management experience in community theater; she told the board she has committed to Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, to study linguistics and French. Principal Carrie Gentry introduced Aaron Walker, a South High senior who was named student of the week and who has been awarded a trustee scholarship at the University of Wyoming; Aaron said he plans a two-year church mission before college.
Carey Junior High Principal Matt Schlegel and Jackson Lucero's teachers introduced Jackson as the March 2 student honoree, praising his quiet leadership, 4.0 GPA and athletic achievements; Jackson thanked family, coaches and teacher Ryan Mary. Jeremy Qualls introduced district spelling-bee winners who will advance to the state competition March 21 in Rock Springs. East High Principal Mark Kirchner and head coach Alyssa Jones recognized the East High cheer and stunt team as the 4A state champions.
Western Vista Federal Credit Union's marketing manager Christina Krantz presented certificates and Visa gift cards to the students and to the teachers they selected. District staff thanked volunteers and teachers for their roles in student achievement and noted the sponsors who support the weekly recognitions.
The recognitions capped with applause and thanks from the board and the room; trustees congratulated the students and coaches and noted upcoming events where the students will represent the district.
