Justin Hammond, a Cary resident, told the Cary Town Council on Sept. 11 that the crosswalk at Kingswood Drive and North Harrison Avenue is a safety risk for pedestrians, including children and families, and urged the town to add proven safety measures before a crash happens.
Hammond said the crossing “lacks a lot of the key safety features that we have all around the town like lighting, high-visibility signage, and flashing beacons to alert the drivers on Harrison Avenue.” He invoked a 2023 fatality on Walnut Street to underline the consequences of inaction, saying, “it’s only a matter of time before something tragic happens.”
Hammond asked council to consider specific changes: lighted crosswalk signs, improved pavement markings and a pedestrian-activated beacon at the Kingswood and Harrison intersection. The council accepted the public comment; no formal vote or direction to staff was recorded in the meeting transcript.
