Senate committee unanimously backs letting social work students sit licensure exam in final semester
Summary
Senate Bill 485, which would allow students in accredited MSW programs to take their social work licensure exam during their final semester so they can begin practicing as soon as coursework is complete, passed the Regulated Industries and Utilities committee unanimously and will advance to rules.
Senator Payne told the Senate Regulated Industries and Utilities committee SB485 is a simple parity measure extending to social workers the practice already available to licensed professional counselors and marriage-and-family therapists: students in their final semester may sit the licensure exam.
"As we are in dire need of more mental health providers, this is just a way to expedite that process to get these men and women into the workforce," Senator Payne said.
There were no registered opponents and no amendments. Senator Alberts moved to report the bill favorably; the motion carried unanimously. The committee noted the bill will next go to the rules committee.
What happens next: With committee approval, SB485 will be scheduled in rules before any possible Senate floor consideration.
