The Ione City Council voted March 3 to accept Amar County Transportation Commission roadway rehabilitation funding of $665,000 for the Ione Junior High access road, with a required local match of $50,000.
Debbie Mackey presented the grant award and asked the council to authorize staff to issue requests for proposals under the city’s procurement rules. She told council members the competitive grant will address pavement deterioration and improve safety and accessibility for students, staff and visitors. "Acceptance of the ACTC funding combined with the city's local match contribution will enable full project delivery without additional unfunded obligations," she said.
Council members praised staff and the engineering consultant for securing the award. Council member Mitchell said the project was a “slam dunk,” noting that a $50,000 local match leverages substantial county funding. Vice Mayor Rhodess and other members also expressed support.
No public speakers opposed the grant during the comment period. Following a motion, second and voice vote the council approved the acceptance and authorized staff to proceed with procurement. The motion passed with one member recorded as opposed during the earlier consent-calendar proceedings but the council approved the ACTC grant on the floor during the regular agenda.
Next steps described by staff include preparing and issuing an RFP for construction consistent with the city’s procurement policies and the ACTC grant conditions. The packet included a summary of competing applications and the staff recommendation to move promptly to maintain project momentum.
