Millington Municipal Schools board highlights students, staff and upcoming testing

The Millington Municipal Schools board opened its meeting with employee and student recognitions and a series of campus reports that previewed spring testing and community events.
Mr. Griffin reviewed awards for January and February, naming Miss Adrien Lawson as employee of the month (school nurse) and listing students honored across grade levels. He said the district received complimentary feedback from state special-education reviewers and noted the robotics club earned an award and grant from the Tennessee Valley Authority.
The report covered Black History Month activities, counselor- and staff-appreciation events, a second-grade wax museum, and Read Across America dress-up days. Mr. Griffin said third graders will take a “third and final case assessment” the week of March 4; the results, he said, are used to refine instruction prior to TECAP testing.
The board also recognized outstanding performers and athletes from Millington Central, including students selected for honor bands and student-athletes who advanced in wrestling competition. Several new hires were announced: Kate Brock as a welding teacher, Belvita Nelson in part-time nutrition and Lexit Naro as a part-time custodian.
Mr. Griffin told the board that the Department of Education approved the district’s mid-snow-day waiver, and that he will be meeting with state representatives in Nashville in coming weeks. He also thanked staff and volunteers who organized Black History Month events, singling out Marissa Briggs for her role in planning.
The meeting closed the public-comment period with no speakers signed up and moved on to the business agenda.
The board is scheduled to begin a district strategic-plan process in April with consultant surveys and a stakeholder committee; a contract to hire Southern Educational Strategies LLC was later approved on the agenda.
