Kanan Shu addressed the Hickory City Council during public comment on March 3 to ask that the city preserve and invest in the Stanford Skate Park.
"Since the skate park was built in 2007, it has become an important part of my life and the lives of many others in our community," Shu said, adding that he has launched a petition asking the city to repair and modernize the facility after the mini ramp was removed last year. He said the park provides a safe place for skaters and that replacing skate features with additional pickleball courts would not meet the community need.
Shu said the petition quickly gathered signatures and urged council members not to "take the park from us," asking them to invest in improvements that would serve beginners through experts and keep skating off curbs and benches throughout the city.
Council did not take action on the skate-park petition at the meeting; Shu asked council to consider the petition and invest in the site.
