Board logs consent items including $2.58M in hurricane relief for Burke County schools

Of particular note, the county manager presented budget amendment number 15 totaling $2,580,000. The manager said these are hurricane-relief dollars allocated statewide and this portion was assigned to Burke County Public Schools to fund HVAC (HBAC) repairs at Freedom High School; the county will draw the funds through the county banking system and pass them on to the school system. "The net impact on the county is zero," the manager said.
Other consent items the board kept on the agenda included a $14,277 state DHS grant for emergency placement funds (no local match), $26,760 from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services for family reunification costs (no county match), a $5,600 senior center grant for contracted shredding services (federal funds), and a $36,550 donation from the library foundation to the library activities budget.
The board also reviewed multiple appointments and removals for advisory boards, parks and recreation, the library board of trustees, and the veteran service board; these items will proceed through the normal appointment or removal process or be finalized at the regular meeting when applications and eligibility are confirmed.
No objections were recorded during the consent-item presentations and several items were carried forward on the consent agenda for final action at the regular meeting.
