ALIEF ISD and GE Vernova outline turbine-maintenance internship pathway for CTE students

ALIEF ISD and GE Vernova said on an Impact Ed podcast that they are launching a workforce pipeline to give Career and Technical Education students paid internships and a clear path into turbine maintenance and advanced-manufacturing jobs.
On the episode, Jennifer Baker, director of Career and Technical Education for ALIEF ISD, said the partnership will align the district’s industrial robotics and CTE competencies with the processes GE uses on gas turbines and provide students “an opportunity for an internship and future employment.” Jim Rosen, GE Vernova’s director of Global Training Delivery, described a hands-on summer program and a progression path from mechanical assistant to field engineer.
The program will offer a four-week, Monday–Friday summer internship at GE’s Houston training facility for graduating seniors. Rosen said the capstone will be a “hot gas path” or combustion inspection on a 6B gas turbine, in which students remove, inspect and reassemble the combustion system under senior instructors’ supervision. Participants will receive industry-focused instruction in tooling, rigging and safety and will earn competencies that GE evaluates quarterly for eligibility for pay increases.
Rosen described the broader industry need driving the effort: GE operates roughly 3,300 turbines in the United States and expects to add about 200–300 turbines per year over the next three to five years, creating demand for technicians who can install and maintain equipment. ALIEF and GE framed the partnership as a way to funnel locally trained talent directly into those roles.
ALIEF said it plans to enroll a small cohort in the fall: the district stated it expects seven students from ALIEF to participate; GE referenced a target of about 20 total across the three partner districts (ALIEF, Channelview ISD and Deer Park ISD). The podcast did not reconcile those two figures. GE said the internships will be paid and that early-career employees can advance through credentialing and short training programs to roles such as turbine mechanic and field engineer.
Panelists emphasized that seats are not limited to students in industrial-robotics programs. Jennifer Baker and GE representatives said the program can accept students from automotive, electrical, construction and engineering pathways and that the district will host parent engagement events. ALIEF announced a parent night on March 19 where GE staff will answer questions; GE also plans a hiring day at the training center so families can see students sign offers.
Raymond Johnson, CTE instructor at the Marshall Center, and Jim Rosen encouraged students to consider nontraditional pathways into well-paying skilled trades and stressed that the experience and certifications earned in CTE are transferable across industries. “You don’t have to think of it as a permanent thing — once you get inside the company, you can move and do other things,” Rosen said.
