Knox County OKs about $9,700 storage purchase for ARPA correctional door project; budget reallocation to follow

County staff told the Knox County Commission on Nov. 12 that the ARPA-funded Correctional Facility Door Project generated more door parts and whole doors than anticipated and that the county lacks internal space to store the materials. Staff proposed buying a ConX storage container and completing minor site work for placement, and the commission approved the purchase.
The presenting staff member said the additional parts and doors were not originally forecast and that the container would be used for the duration of the project and afterward for spare parts. “The total cost is about $9700,” the staff member said. The staff presentation also estimated that when orders are complete and the storage unit is purchased, about $60,000 would remain from the original door allocation.
Commissioners questioned whether the budget committee must approve use of the remaining funds. Staff said the container purchase is within the scope of the current project but that the larger reallocation of roughly $60,000 would be brought before the commission and the budget committee and must be resolved before Dec. 31. One commissioner noted that a budget committee meeting is scheduled Thursday where those items will appear.
Staff described the container purchase as a practical measure to avoid cannibalizing parts from existing doors and to maintain a cache of replacement parts during the facilities rebuild. The motion to authorize the container purchase and site work passed unanimously.
