The Sayreville Board of Education voted March 3, 2026, to enter closed session under Section 8 of the Open Public Meetings Act (Chapter 231, P.L. 1975) to discuss personnel matters, student matters and negotiations with the SCA.
A board member asked that a resolution be read. Mr. Sha read language citing the statute and stating that the board would exclude the public from discussion of specified subject matters. As read: "Section 8 of the Open Public Meetings Act, Chapter 231 P.L. 1975, permits the exclusion of the public from discussion of an action upon the matters as follows" and the resolution goes on to list personnel, student matters and negotiations with the SCA. The resolution states it "shall take effect immediately" and that the subject matter "shall be made public at such time as the need for non-disclosure no longer exists."
The transcript shows the motion was seconded; a board member corrected the record to note that Mrs. Pavone seconded the motion. The transcript does not clearly identify who moved the resolution. The chair asked "All in favor?" and the board responded by voice; the meeting proceeded into closed session during the recorded portion of the meeting.
No individual roll-call votes or detailed discussion were included in the public portion of the transcript provided. The board indicated the topics discussed in closed session would be disclosed when nondisclosure was no longer necessary.
The meeting had opened with the pledge of allegiance and a roll call listing board members in attendance. The public notice portion of the record states the meeting notice had been sent to the Home News Tribune and the Star-Ledger, to the borough clerk, and posted on the secretary's bulletin board prior to the meeting.
