Mount Clemens begins first reading of floodplain management amendment to preserve NFIP eligibility

The Mount Clemens City Commission on Sept. 21 introduced an amendment to the city's construction code (section 21.03, section 3) to update dates and flood-panel numbers to align with revised federal flood maps and the accompanying flood insurance study.
Community Development Director Brian Tingley explained the city recently received revised flood maps and a flood insurance study that will be effective Dec. 30 of this year. The amendment updates the ordinance so residents in designated flood areas remain eligible for federal National Flood Insurance Program coverage. Tingley said the city engineer reviewed the maps and concluded Mount Clemens is unaffected by the update, and he said the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy reviewed the ordinance amendment for accuracy.
The commission approved introduction and set the second reading and adoption for Oct. 5, 2020.
