Public commenter urges ordinances on energy projects; extension director to retire April 30

During the communications portion of the Feb. 25 Tazewell County Board meeting a public commenter introduced as Mr. Roi told the board there is an organized, multi‑group opposition to a proposed pipeline or similar energy project and urged the county to develop ordinances protecting unincorporated areas and natural resources.

Mr. Roi said community groups have visited existing operations, raised concerns about noise and traffic, and would like the county’s ordinances to be updated as soon as practical to address siting and protective guidelines for battery‑type or energy facilities. He told board members he had distributed materials outlining the group’s work.

Board members responded that ordinance work is underway through committee channels, and one member noted feasibility and planning work the county has been doing; there was no formal motion or vote recorded on the agenda item during the meeting.

Later in the meeting an extension official identified as Allen told the board he will retire effective April 30 after roughly 20 years with the extension service. Allen said he had distributed the department’s annual report to board packets and thanked members for their support during his tenure as county extension director.

No formal board action on either the ordinance request or on the extension position was recorded during the meeting; both items will return to committee or future agenda cycles if the board pursues ordinance drafting or preparatory steps for the extension program.
