The Holyoke City Finance Committee on Feb. 25 voted to accept a $15,000, no‑match Mass Cultural Council Cultural District Investment grant to support the city’s Puerto Rican Cultural District.
Stephanie, who spoke for the cultural district, said the funding will be used for district programming and to support Main Street small businesses through storefront improvements, public installations in the Armory Yard and targeted small grants for signage or painting. She said the grant also helped support participation by a district artist or representative (Salena) at a previous cultural district event. Stephanie clarified that a larger plaza project known as "La Placita" is a separate, longer‑term effort that has some CDBG support but is not funded through this particular grant.
Committee members asked for examples of past uses and how the funds will be deployed; Stephanie described both direct business supports and programmatic uses. The committee voted to accept the grant.
