Big Walnut board approves $330,000 purchase of Kickstart math remediation program

The Big Walnut Local School Board voted Dec. 16 to buy the Kickstart math remediation program for $330,000 to support small‑group math intervention in early grades.

Mr Robertson, who briefed trustees on the program, described Kickstart as an evidence‑based small‑group remediation system intended for tier‑2 and tier‑3 early numeracy (K–2, extending into grade 3). He told the board the program combines a diagnostic assessment with a progression‑based curriculum that follows a conceptual→representational→abstract sequence and is designed to give tutors a standardized framework for instruction. "One student who tried it said it was ‘the best day of math they' ever had,'" Robertson said, relaying teacher and student feedback.

Board members asked about prior distribution of materials, teacher input and family notification; Robertson said materials were available in the board office and that letters to families of participating classrooms were being sent. The board approved the purchase after a motion moved by Mr Crra and seconded by Mrs Nicks. The roll‑call vote recorded Mrs Nicks, Mr Fuji, Mrs Graziosi and Mr Crra voting yes; Mr Duffy was absent. The motion carried.

The purchase follows the district's presentation of its staffing plan and curriculum pilots; trustees and administrators said implementation logistics and training will be scheduled so tutors and instructional staff can deliver the program consistently. The board did not amend the purchase amount at the meeting and expects administration to return with operational details as the program is rolled out.
