Woods County committee reviews loan fund, Turkey Hunt plans and local projects

Committee staff provided several operational updates and project briefs during the March 3 meeting.

Revolving loan fund: Staff reported a $16,000 allocation in the revolving loan fund had been extended to the end of July while a potential applicant finalizes financing. The committee heard that the revolving-loan application goes first to a revolving loan committee for recommendation and then to the Industrial Development Authority for approval. Staff described prior loan terms as having ranged up to about 4.5% interest and five years in length and said eligible uses can include equipment purchases or certification expenses, subject to local rules.

Turkey Hunt and guest logistics: The committee reviewed plans for the Lieutenant Governor's Turkey Hunt (April 15—617). A retail workshop open to the public is scheduled April 15 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the same meeting room; reception/dinner events are set for the evening of April 16 at Cheryl Barn, with the lieutenant governor expected to speak before the dinner begins. Staff said several guests had confirmed and that officials are coordinating tours to the sand-dune area, Legacy Ranch and other local sites; members emphasized hosting responsibilities and visitor engagement.

Industrial Development Authority and grants: Staff said the Woods County Industrial Development Authority did not meet that morning and that anticipated IDA agenda items include the turkey hunt and revolving loan fund. Staff reported that an application for a Freedom Beautification Project grant was still pending, that a potential T-Mobile funding avenue would not proceed, and that a Main Street grant (which would require a local match) could become available in September with awards up to $25,000.

Railroad and business updates: Staff described outreach to restore a railroad stop in Woka—BNSF currently routes crews via other towns and a motel owner is working to accommodate crew needs — and said restoring service could benefit lodging, restaurants and local services. Staff also reported two new businesses starting operations (one providing UTV-guided tours and rentals) and noted an upcoming UTV invasion event Oct. 1—4; staff said they would distribute event schedules to local businesses to coordinate services and volunteer needs.

No formal action was taken on these items beyond the information updates; staff will continue outreach and return with further information as needed.
