County updates service center, transit site and fairgrounds demolition timelines

County staff updated commissioners on several facilities projects during the Sept. 9 meeting.

Staff said the Knox County Service Center renovation (the "back project") has progressed and that sprinkler solutions and solar panel installation remain the primary outstanding tasks. Work crews are installing the panels and staff must remove protective film from each panel after installation; completion of that work is a gating item for reopening the building to staff. Staff said they are hopeful the building can return to limited staff use in early October but emphasized the schedule is contingent on remaining panel work.

The county also reported a pre‑construction meeting for the transit site and the sheriff's project; the architect will meet today with county representatives and the contractor to review prevailing‑wage compliance, electrical access and access points for the sheriff. Staff said construction schedules will be provided at the pre‑construction meeting and estimated the interior block work will be the bulk of the project.

Commissioner Lester had requested demolition of a fairgrounds house; staff said funding was budgeted and that Jeff Wintermute would visit the site and provide a demolition price. Staff will return with the estimate and schedule once received.

Staff noted logistics for clearing stored items and said the sheriff expects to move some materials into temporary storage while obsolete items will be disposed of. The county will file required permits and coordinate signage updates for building entrances as part of reoccupancy planning.
