Organizer wins council approval to extend Main Street car show hours

The Evanston City Council approved a street-closure and a two-hour extension to permit a planned Main Street car show, following a detailed presentation from the event organizer.
Mr. Pence, who asked the council to allow the street closure, said the car show has previously drawn vehicles and visitors from neighboring cities and that downtown businesses and potential sponsors were “absolutely excited” to host the event. He told the council he expects a large vendor presence and as many as 200 cars on Main Street and asked for an extended cleanup window to protect high-value vehicles: “...some of these cars are in excess of $100,000 plus ... they clear out fairly quick ... I just want to make double sure that we have the time to clean up the street,” he said.
Council members discussed logistics briefly. Chief Ranis said he saw no issue with the requested extension. Council moved to approve the consent agenda item with the extended closing time; the motion passed by voice vote and no opposition was recorded. The council noted the open-container question should be pursued as a separate permit application if the event organizer wishes to coordinate with Brewfest activities taking place the same day.
The approved closure will run to 5:00 p.m. per the council motion; the organizer said vendors would stage on Main Street and downtown businesses would be asked to participate at no charge. Mr. Pence also said the event had been paused during the pandemic and that organizers wanted to restart it to support downtown commerce.
