Museum rebuild, shore protection at Piney Point and spring events highlighted in Rec & Parks report

Karen Stone, museum manager for St. Mary's County, updated the Recreation and Parks Advisory Board on multiple museum and waterfront projects and a slate of spring events.
Stone said the Saint Clement's Island Museum foundation and elevator tower shaft are in place and that exhibit design work has been contracted to the Adler Agency of Maryland. She described the look and materials planned for the exhibits and said the team is now working with DPW on interior details.
On shoreline work at Piney Point, Stone described completed stone wall installations and sand fill designed to reduce storm erosion; the sand will be planted with seagrasses in spring with help from environmental science students. "That was what the engineers came up with... the sand will be planted with seagrasses," she said, and reported that barges and placement work were finishing the week of the meeting.
Stone said the First Landing Explorer boat has completed most inspections but is awaiting a "Deadman's" buoyancy test; the necessary certification depends on a small federal agency that has limited operations due to a partial government shutdown, she said. When completed, she said, the boat will meet ADA standards, carry more passengers and be able to travel farther along the Potomac.
Stone also previewed Maryland Day (mass March 25 and ceremony March 29), the unveiling of a marker honoring the region's stuffed‑ham food history, and a two‑day "Rebels and Redcoats" Revolutionary War event at Piney Point with reenactors, music, narrated boat tours and an unveiling of a new marker on Saint George Island.
No formal board action was taken on these reports; they were presented for information and upcoming planning coordination.
