Greenville — Barb Fletcher proposed a volunteer initiative called the "Greeny Project" to the Greenville City Council, asking permission for volunteers to paint two-color green symbols ("greenies") on sidewalks or driveways downtown and to offer nylon flags for residents who lack suitable driveways.
Fletcher said the program would start with the football team and expand to other teams and community groups. She described the plan as a fundraiser and community-spirit project: 16 corner greenies would be sold at $50 each, and she proposed splitting proceeds 50/50 between the participating team/club and the Greenville school foundation or boosters. She also offered flags as an alternative to painted driveways for residents with gravel driveways or limited visible frontage.
“...my vision was to see a greeny on every corner of Broadway so that anyone who comes to downtown Greenville will see our green wave pride,” Fletcher said. She said volunteers will paint and that local volunteers (Ron Kirk among those named) have stencils and paint expertise.
Mayor Whitaker told the council he was supportive of the volunteer effort and emphasized that no city money is involved; he said the booster organization would lead the effort and that sidewalk work would require city permission. Council members and residents asked about dimensions (roughly two feet), durability of paint, and alternatives for those without driveways.
Fletcher left order forms and contact numbers (she provided a phone number in the public comment period) for interested residents and groups; the mayor and council indicated general support, subject to staff review for downtown sidewalk permissions.
What’s next: The mayor and city staff will coordinate with the boosters and the project lead on permission for painting on downtown sidewalks and finalize any requirements or restrictions; no city budget request was proposed.
