Developer previews senior-affordable housing project; council sets Jan. 20 public hearing

Spire Development introduced a proposal Dec. 16 to rezone 1249 Schwitzer Street (the former Dairy Barn property) to allow a senior-restricted, affordable rental community.
"We're looking to do a 50 or 65 unit, excuse me, senior restricted affordable housing rental community at 1249 Schwitzer Street," Sean McMichol of Spire Development said, adding the company intends to apply for funding in February to make the project a reality. McMichol said the goal is a dedicated housing stock for seniors "so that they can live and thrive in the community." He provided a brief overview at council after the planning commission recommended approval.
Planning & Zoning Chairman Jeff Whitaker forwarded the commission's recommendation in writing, noting the commission voted to recommend rezoning the parcel from GB (General Business) to PUDR (Planned Unit Development Residential) under the city's zoning code and that council per section 5.06 must now take action.
Council set a public hearing on the rezoning for Jan. 20 and invited members of the public to testify that evening. No final zoning vote was taken on Dec. 16; council will hear public testimony before deciding whether to approve the rezoning request.
