Board reviews proposed K–12 dress code after 3,500 community responses; staff suggest lead time before enforcement

Staff presented a proposed district dress code developed by a committee of administrators, teachers and parents with stated goals of consistency, equity and clear expectations across buildings.

The committee gathered public input: the district posted the draft and received 3,546 survey responses and 1,926 written comments. Administrators overwhelmingly called the draft reasonable (about 85%); parents (76%) generally found it reasonable; students were more likely to call it too restrictive (61% too restrictive). Staff said they reviewed trends in comments and revised the draft accordingly and that the board would take a vote on March 21.

Board members discussed implementation timing and enforcement details. Several members recommended approving the policy now but allowing principals and families time over the summer to prepare and update handbooks. Specific enforcement questions raised included whether principals can locally adjust rules, how to handle hair color and torn clothing thresholds, and whether accessories that obscure the face (sunglasses, face paint) should be addressed through administrative discretion.

Staff said the intent was to give principals and families months of notice so handbooks and parent communications can be revised and parents can purchase clothing as needed. The board did not take a vote at this meeting; staff sought additional feedback prior to the upcoming voting session.
