During the Jan. 14 study session the Sumner County Board of Education ran a first reading of a draft policy on board norms and a code of conduct. Members discussed sample language provided from the Tennessee School Boards Association and raised issues to refine before a vote.
Discussion points included phrasing around majority decisions and whether members should be asked to "give support" to board actions after a vote, confidentiality and executive-session materials, use and moderation of official board social-media pages versus personal accounts, and the value of owning policy language rather than adopting external text wholesale.
Board members agreed not to put the draft on the January voting session and to continue collaborative edits. Staff said they will circulate sample TSBA policies and redraft language based on the board’s input for future consideration.
