County recreation reports strong enrollment: flag football, camps and pickleball classes in high demand

Recreation staff told the advisory board on March 5 that program enrollments are strong across youth and adult offerings: flag football registrations have jumped substantially, several youth teams advanced from district tournaments to state play, pickleball beginner classes filled to capacity with waitlists, and spring break and summer camps reached capacity quickly, prompting staff to expand slots where possible.

Staff said the department added a new female flag football league for ages 11–13 after sufficient registration, noted two all-girls T-ball teams for the season, and reported that indoor adult soccer and adult volleyball leagues are proceeding with solid team counts. Summer basketball registration opens April 1 and staff expects camps to require additional seasonal hires; a county hiring event is planned for March 23 to recruit lifeguards, counselors and drivers.

Programs highlighted include adaptive athletics (ongoing classes), beginner pickleball (full class rosters and waitlists), and new offerings such as karate. Staff said they are attempting to expand staff capacity so camps can grow from initial enrollment caps (for example, athlete camps moving from an initial cap of 30 toward a target of 50 with additional hires).

Next steps: staff will continue recruitment and return to the board if program locations or schedules must be adjusted because of facility work.
