Board member disputes article labeling Washtenaw County a 'sanctuary'; sheriff to meet with ICE, board says

A board member disputed an online article and social media posts that listed Washtenaw County as a 'sanctuary county' for undocumented immigrants, saying the board has no such resolution or county policy.
"I have gone through several years of resolutions and policies and we have no resolution that this board has ever put in place or no policy that says that we are a sanctuary County for illegal immigrants," the board member said, adding that Sheriff Taylor is working with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to contest the listing and has a meeting scheduled next week to address it.
The remarks prompted several public commenters to address related topics. One attendee urged the board to add an "address ordinance" to the agenda and requested a roll-call vote to record who supports placing the ordinance on a future agenda. Eric Molor, who identified himself as being "from [a township]," read provisions of the Michigan Constitution about political power and said he was seeking details about a special meeting concerning Second Amendment and red-flag laws.
Another commenter questioned the credibility of the news source cited and criticized county policy on political activity at county facilities, saying that venue access should be consistent across groups.
The board indicated staff and the sheriff's office will follow up to correct any erroneous public listings and that Commissioners will discuss next steps as information from ICE and county research becomes available.
