"In order for us to be able to do some good teaching and learning, we have to be safe, warm and dry," the committee member said.
Kris Brurud, the district’s head of maintenance, described the mechanical replacements completed or underway. "We had two boilers in here that were older; kind of hit their end of life," Brurud said. He said new boilers and pumps have been installed, and a new rooftop air handler with new ducting was added to serve classrooms in the wing.
Brurud said the upgrades are intended to improve comfort and provide reliable heating: "The comfort in the classrooms because of the airflow is going to be an improvement. It's going to be able to heat reliably. No issues there."
He also said the district plans to replace the entire school roof and that the roofing project will cost about $905,000.
A committee member noted that "big things like this are approved by the board," and said one replaced boiler dated to 1985 had reached the end of its service life. They thanked Brurud for managing the projects and said the district expects to open school on time. "We will start school on time at Hagan," the committee member said; staff stated Aug. 19 as the start date.
