The Odessa R‑VII School Board opened Monday’s meeting with recognitions for staff, volunteers and students.
The board named Miss Ty Johnson, identified in the transcript as the district’s high school process coordinator, as the month’s 'Making a Difference' award winner and said the district will feature her on social media and present a plaque.
Mr. Shippy presented a Community Champion plaque to volunteers from the Back Snack program, which the presenter said began in 2007 when retired educator Laura Scott recognized a need for out‑of‑school food support. Staff told the board the program now works with six local churches and provides more than 50 backpacks of food per week relying on donations and volunteers.
The board also recognized student card designers: Leah Sanders created the Christmas card and Jada Starman designed the birthday cards. Each student will receive a $25 check and complimentary sets of cards for staff distribution.
No board action was recorded in the transcript on the recognitions; they were presented as informational items.
