Weston committee to interview low-bid assessor after debating local access versus cost

"Greg has performed well for the village," a committee member said, noting his regular in-person office hours and responsiveness. Committee members weighed that local access and responsiveness against potential cost savings from lower bidders.
The committee discussed software differences, noting that some firms use Market Drive (a computer-assisted mass appraisal tool) while others would not require that license. Staff said the village currently pays for Market Drive and estimated that associated licensing would be roughly $2,000 annually.
Members asked about how firms would handle court appearances and additional legal costs; one member noted Greg has not charged extra in past court matters and asked whether other firms would impose fees for testimony. Staff read portions of the Accurate proposal that commit to scheduling regular office hours in the municipal center, providing a local contact and returning calls within 48 hours.
On a motion, the committee voted to invite Accurate to a future committee meeting for an interview and to gather more information about references and local service levels; the motion passed on a voice vote. Members discussed the option of also inviting Greg Schmidt for a direct interview or asking the village board to direct interviews at the board level. The committee did not make a final contractor selection at the meeting.
The committee said it will develop clearer contract language and expectations in the next RFP cycle — including terms for court testimony and charges for extra service — before a final recommendation is made to the board.
