Florencio Hernandez appointed to Board of Police Commissioners

The Lansing City Council appointed Florencio Hernandez as the first-ward member of the Board of Police Commissioners during the Feb. 23 meeting.
Council Member Hussein moved Hernandez’s appointment after noting Mr. Hernandez’s application, committee interview, and civic background. During the public committee presentation staff said Hernandez has worked for Michigan State University (outreach and engagement), served on the city’s DEI advisory board, and is president of the Hispanic Latino Commission; he pledged neighborhood engagement activities such as listening sessions and outreach to organizations including the school district and community college.
Several council members praised Hernandez’s community engagement and said they would support his appointment. One council member explained a ‘no’ vote as a protest of the city’s appointment process rather than of the individual nominee. The motion to appoint carried and the council clerk administered the oath of office at the meeting.
No formal complaint to the council altered the outcome; the appointment was completed and Hernandez took the oath.
