Pinellas Park, Fla. — The City Council on Oct. 24 authorized submission of an Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) fiscal‑year 2024 application intended to pay for ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) instructor training and for equipment and ammunition purchases for the Pinellas Park Police Department.
Tammy Hiler, the city's community services manager, said the JAG program is a formula federal grant that funds law‑enforcement prevention, training, technology and victim services. Hiler told the council the city would use the award to send instructor‑level trainers for a two‑day ALICE instructor course so local instructors can run future trainings; she said remaining funds would be used for ammunition and field‑operations equipment. "The JAG application is...the leading Federal source of Criminal Justice funding for state and local jurisdictions," Hiler said.
Council voted to adopt Resolution 24‑22 (first and final reading) authorizing the mayor and city manager to execute the application and related assurances; the motion carried unanimously. If the grant is awarded, the police department will schedule the training, procure the stated equipment and follow Bureau of Justice Assistance reporting requirements.
What happens next: Staff will file the grant solicitation application with the U.S. Department of Justice and notify the council of any award; subsequent expenditures will follow approved procurement rules and grant reporting timelines.
