Kenai accepts $8,000 American Library Association grant for digital health literacy programming

The Kenai City Council on March 4 enacted Ordinance 3506‑2026 to accept and appropriate an $8,000 American Library Association grant for the Kenai Community Library to participate in the ‘‘Digital Pathways’’ online health‑literacy pilot for adults.
The library director described the program as combining digital‑literacy and health‑literacy services, expanding online resources, programming and equipment checkout. She said Kenai is one of 12 libraries nationwide to receive the pilot award and named Hannah Meyer as the project director who helped write the grant and will lead local efforts.
"It combines digital literacy services and health literacy services," the library director said. She told council the grant will fund equipment purchases, online resource additions and programming designed to help adults find and evaluate online health information.
Council members praised the library staff for securing competitive grant funding and asked about privacy; staff said the program will not collect medical or protected health information and equipment checkouts will be handled like other library loans.
Ordinance 3506‑2026 was enacted by roll call with unanimous votes recorded; staff said the library will implement programming and provide updates to council as the pilot progresses.
