Trustees said they will schedule a study session (suggested Nov.–Dec.) to review the findings and to determine whether to prepare a bond proposal based on the assessments.
The board also reviewed loose cost estimates for renovating Ford High School elements (gym floor, hallway improvements and murals) and discussed a parcel near Dearborn High that the district owns but the city currently uses. Trustees said those property questions and naming conversations will proceed alongside the facilities review.
Trustees and administration discussed after-hours access to school playgrounds and fields. Several trustees described inconsistent practices across the district — some elementary playgrounds remain open while certain varsity fields with turf remain locked. Dr. Malo, speaking during superintendent commentary, said the district’s general direction has been to keep playgrounds open and that turf or fields used in summer programs may be locked for safety: “my general direction has been to keep them open.” He said administration and operations staff will review closures with principals and operations personnel and reiterated that some closures are program-driven or safety-driven.
Trustees also raised requests from the police department for clearer guidance on intervening on school property after hours and for consistent signage (for example, clearer “no trespassing” markers). The board asked administration to convene city relations and operations staff so the district and city can align on signage, trespass enforcement and expectations for after-hours response.
