The Dearborn Board of Education on Monday discussed a proposed amendment to Policy 511.02 to clarify that grandchildren of current employees may enroll in district schools even if they are non-residents.
The board was told the change is a minor language update that expands eligibility to grandparents (and therefore grandchildren) and reflects recent collective bargaining agreements. Trustees were told the benefit applies to all employee groups districtwide and does not require the child to live with the employee or be the employee's legal guardian.
At the meeting, a trustee asked whether grandchildren must live with the employee. Trusty Alami asked, “So, grandchildrens are they living with them?” Administrators replied that the negotiated agreements allow current employees to enroll their grandchildren regardless of residency or legal guardianship, subject to school capacity.
Trustees pressed for numbers about how many students currently take advantage of the policy. Board members estimated the total would be under 200 across a district of roughly 20,000 students; staff said they would provide exact figures at a later date.
The board chair said the item will appear on the next board meeting agenda for formal consideration unless trustees request further changes.
Next steps: the administration will return enrollment figures and capacity implications ahead of the board’s vote on the policy amendment.
