Council adopts Safe Streets & Roads for All plan to qualify for safety grants

The Amarillo City Council voted to adopt the Safe Streets & Roads for All action plan, a citywide safety plan that lists 16 capital projects and establishes eligibility for multiple grant categories that fund sidewalks, school-zone improvements, speed cushions and other pedestrian- and cyclist-safety measures.
"The plan has specific criteria within it and so we have to go through this process to make us eligible to access the grant program," presenter Miss Coler told the council. She said the plan aligns projects to grant categories and includes cost estimates so the city can pursue federal and state funding in addition to local matching sources.
Council members asked for a brief recap for the public about how the plan becomes grant-ready. Miss Coler said the plan identifies projects and the grant categories for which they are eligible and that transportation consultants helped ensure the plan meets required criteria. The plan is intended to complement the city's CIP and to leverage matching funds when grants are available.
Council adopted Ordinance No. 8188 to approve the plan. Staff said several projects are candidates for immediate grant applications and for inclusion in the city's capital-improvement program.
Next step: staff will pursue grant opportunities and return to council with project-specific funding and programming recommendations when appropriate.
